Notebook - Bellwork Side

#1             Similes & Metaphors

Write out the following two definitions:

SIMILE -> compare two different things by using the words "like" or "as"

METAPHOR -> compare two different things by stating one thing IS the other one

Now create TWO examples of your own of a SIMILE and a METAPHOR.

    (4+ sentences)

Write down these notes under your bell work entry:

Must COMPARE TWO NOUNS.

-> can NOT be a verb, adjective, etc.

The TWO NOUNS you compare can NOT be the SAME thing!

BAD -> comparing Garfield to a cat

-> comparing floor to the ground

-> comparing Mr. Broviak to a teacher

Can NOT use the word “LOOKS” in a GOOD simile or metaphor!

BAD -> That dog looks like an angry lion.
GOOD  -> That dog is like an angry lion.

Copy this poem into your notebook.  You will have to memorize it for class.

    But with the metaphor,

Use them no more.  (WAVE YOUR HANDS BACK AND FORTH SHOWING "NO")

    The comparing of TWO,

Is what you will do.  (HOLD UP TWO FINGERS AND POINT AT AUDIENCE)
